“Pick up and knit 182 stitches evenly spaced around neck opening.”

Um. What? Where? How? Why? Some pick-up lines work better than others. Learn where, how, why, and exactly what to pick up for neckbands, button bands, sleeves, sock heels — wherever you need to pick up stitches successfully. You’ll practice picking up, picking up and knitting, picking up and purling (yes, that’s three different things), and how to avoid those pesky holes at the corners of neckbands and sock heels.

“If I were a cat, I’d spend all nine of my lives with you.” Now THERE’S a pick-up line I can wrap my head around.

Note:

  • All knitting class sessions will take place online via Zoom at the appointed times only, and will not be recorded.
  • A Zoom link will be emailed to each student 24 hours prior to each upcoming class session.
  • The online instruction will consist of two windows: one with Sarah’s smiling face, and one with on-camera close-ups for demonstration purposes. Each student’s smiling face will also be viewable in a window.
  • Each student will be responsible for using Zoom (super easy by clicking on a link) on an electronic device that is large enough for the instructor window and demonstration window to be clearly viewed.
  • No refunds.

Skill level

  • Adventurous knitter and above
  • MUST be comfortable with both knitting and purling

Materials needed

  • Yarn:
    • 50 gms smooth and light-colored (so you can see what you’re doing), aran or worsted-weight yarn (approximately 4 to 5 sts/inch)
  • Needles:
    • US 7 (4.5mm) needles, or whichever size you would normally use with your chosen yarn
  • Notions:
    • scissors

Homework to be completed before class with yarn and needles described above:

  • Swatch 1
    • Cast on 20 stitches.
    • Knit 40 rows (garter stitch).
    • Bind off. Cut yarn.
  • Swatch 2
    • Cast on 10 stitches.
    • Work in stockinette stitch (knit RS rows; purl WS rows) for 4″, ending with a WS row.
    • Bind off in pattern. Cut yarn.
  • Swatch 3
    • Cast on 10 stitches.
    • Work in K1, P1 Rib for 4″.
    • Bind off. Cut yarn.
  • Swatch 4
    • Cast on 30 stitches.
    • Work in stockinette stitch (knit RS rows; purl WS rows) for 1”, ending with a WS row.
    • Next row (RS): Bind off 10 stitches, knit to end. (20 stitches remain)
    • New row (WS): Purl.
    • Next row: Knit 1, (slip 1 knitwise, k1, psso), knit to end. (1 stitch decreased)
    • Next row: Purl.
    • Repeat last 2 rows fourteen more times. (5 stitches remain)
    • Bind off. Cut yarn.
